Kampung Dew
Situated on the north-west of Malaysia, near the town of Taiping in the State of Perak. Sungai Sepetang is the major river running through the village. And it is an ideal place for bird watching since a lot of local and migratory bird species can be found here such as Little Egret, Little Heron, Brahmin Kite Eagle and Swiftlet. It is also a host to a lot of Mangrove species like Ficus, Piai Raya, Bakau and Nipah. One of the most abundant Mangrove species along the Sungai Sepetang river is the Berembang tree and fireflies here love to perch on this plant species. Because of this, the place became famous for firefly watching activity in Malaysia.
Kampung Dew has been well known as fishermen village as most people is fishermen. However, it is freshly introduced as firefly watching spot because of abundant Berembang tree or Sonneratia Caseoraris.
History of Kampung Dew According to one of the villagers, the name of Kampung Dew originated from a British man named Dew. He first came to the village introducing rubber plantation. For that reason, the villagers decided to name the village subsequent to his name. What makes the fireflies in Kampung Dew different from the others? Pteroptyx Tener is the biggest firefly colony that can be seen living at Berembang tree along Sepetang River in Kampung Dew. The colony of Pteroptyx Tener firefly has the ability to blink in synchronized pattern! |
